Cooled Radiofrequency of the Knee

Presenting Complaint

The patient presented with knee pain of several years duration from osteoarthritis of a severe nature. She was offered knee replacement but wanted to avoid surgery as a knee replacement on the other side had previously been unsuccessful. The pain was constant in nature and severely exacerbated by standing and walking. Her walking ability was restricted to a few steps with 2 crutches and using a wheelchair outdoors.

Previous Investigations/Treatments

Xray of the knee confirmed severe osteoarthritis with bone on bone. She had seen various specialists in the past including physiotherapists, osteopaths, chiropractors and the orthopaedic team. Steroid injections gave her only short-lasting pain relief. Tens and acupuncture, unfortunately, gave her no pain relief.

Treatment from DR. Krishna at Pain Spa

The patient saw Dr. Krishna at his private clinic in Bristol, desperate for some pain relief. Dr. Krishna discussed the option of Coolief treatment (Cooled radiofrequency of the knee). The patient had an excellent response to the diagnostic genicular nerve blocks and subsequently underwent cooled radiofrequency treatment of the knee joint. With 2 weeks of the treatment, she had a significant reduction of pain and marked improvement in her range of movements.

Outcome

At the follow-up appointment 3 months after the injection, the patient reported excellent progress following Coolief treatment. Her function has improved and she is able to walk without crutches. She no longer uses the wheelchair outdoors. She has also managed to reduce her painkillers significantly.

Further review at 9 months revealed an ongoing benefit without any significant pain and improved functional ability.
