Patient with Severe Low Back Pain
Presenting Complaint
90 year old patient presented with long standing low back pain. She complained of severe pain all across the lower back, with radiation to outer hips. Pain would be exacerbated with standing and walking. She was significantly limited with her day to day chores because of the ongoing pain. She could not get comfortable in bed and her sleep was disturbed.
Previous Investigations/ Treatments
The patient had seen various specialists in the past including physiotherapists, osteopaths and orthopaedic surgeons. She was told surgery was not an option in her case. She tried TENS machine and acupuncture without benefit. She tried various pain killers including morphine based medications, but could not tolerate the side effects.
Treatment from Dr. Krishna at Pain Spa
The patient saw Dr. Krishna in his clinic at the Nuffield Hospital in Bristol, desperate for some pain relief. Dr. Krishna felt that her pain was emanating from the lumbar facet joints. Dr. Krishna offered her diagnostic lumbar medial branch blocks, followed by lumbar radiofrequency denervation treatment. This treatment was performed under x-ray guidance without any problems.
Outcome
The patient was reviewed 2 months post procedure, when she reported significant improvement in her back pain. Her function also improved significantly and she was now able to do more activities around her house and also walk without a stick.
